87 Target Disassembly and Reassembly for Cleaning
From Beretta-E
This document was not prepared by an expert. It is to be used for information only. You need to be competent before attempting to perform any gun maintenance or modification.
If you shoot something, someone, or yourself, it is your fault.
Ensure the gun is unloaded. Magazine removed and the chamber is empty.

Tools
1. 3mm punch
2. 1mm punch
3. 1.5mm roll pin punch
4. Crochet hook (if trigger bar is to be removed)
5. grip screw screwdriver
6. approx. 0.06 in. punch
7. hex key to remove counterweight
Or the equivalents of any of the above
Action Disassembly For Cleaning
Remove the counterweight. After removing the cap screws, use a soft wooden dowel (See Fig. 1) to drive it off if it is difficult to remove.
Field strip the pistol according to the instructions in the manual that came with the gun.
Remove the grips, hammer spring cap, and hammer spring using the same process as a 90 series pistol.
The strut will probably fall out with the hammer spring. Fig. 4
Drive out the roll pin on the right safety lever (See Figs. 6 and 7). A 1mm punch works well. Make sure the roll pin slips up over the trigger bar or pull the trigger to get the bar out of the way of the roll pin (I use a velcro wire bundle strap (Fig. 5) to hold the trigger back while driving out the roll pin).
Remove the right safety lever by pulling it off the right side of the gun. Note carefully how the lever fits over the trigger release lever (Fig. 8) - this will be important during reassembly.
Remove the trigger release lever by pulling it off the right side.
Note that the trigger bar does not need to be removed to replace the sear and hammer.
Pull the trigger and push the hammer all the way to the rear. This allows the left safety lever to be pulled out of the frame.
In a bag or keeping your finger over the plunger so that it does not launch, remove the left safety lever. Fig. 9
Pull the hammer pin out of the left side.
Remove the hammer. See Figs. 10 & 11.
Note the position of the sear spring for proper reassembly. Fig. 12
Drive out the sear pin (Fig. 10). Cover the spring with your finger to prevent launch. Remove the sear. See Fig. 13.
Remove the take-down lever by pushing in on the take-down lever pin from the left side of the frame and rotating the take-down lever clockwise until it clears the pin. Release the pin and pull the lever out from the right side of the frame.
Remove the trigger bar spring. Note the orientation for reinstallation.
Remove the trigger bar by pulling it out from the right side of the frame. It may take some wiggling. Finesse not force. Try pulling the trigger back - that may help.
Note carefully how the multi-use take-down and trigger spring is installed.
See Fig. 19
The slide catch holds the trigger and trigger spring in place. Remove the slide catch by pulling it up slightly, then part way out from the left side until the inner part of the catch clears the frame. Rotate the catch down until spring pressure is released and the spring end on the frame is released (see Fig.20). Pull the slide catch all the way out of the frame.
Pull the trigger out through the trigger guard.
Remove the trigger spring if still in the frame.
Remove the take down lever pin.
Action Reassembly
Place the slide catch spring on the slide catch in the proper orientation (see Fig. 21).
Install the trigger from the trigger guard and insert the slide catch pin through the frame and the trigger holes closest to the trigger (the ones on the end are for the trigger bar) See Fig. 26. Do not put the catch into its spring loaded position just yet. See Fig. 20.
Install the take-down lever pin in the frame as shown in Fig 19.
Now for the fun: Put the end of the trigger bar spring into the take-down lever pin hole as shown in Fig 19.
Push the trigger spring coils down into the trigger until they touch the slide catch pin. This is a lot harder than it sounds. Try pushing the trigger all the way forward then slowly pulling it back while pushing down on the spring coils. Don't let the spring end come out of the take-down lever pin. Patience and more patience. Finesse not force.
Now pull the slide catch out just far enough that the trigger is still captured on the left side but the trigger spring coils can be pushed into position into the trigger. Position the spring coils properly into the trigger. Now push the slide catch back in; capturing the spring and trigger on the catch pin. The hard part is over.
Ensure the slide catch spring is positioned properly (Figs 20 & 21) then rotate the catch up and push it in over the frame to its normal position.
Install the take-down lever into position under the pin in the take-down position.
To install the trigger bar, pick up the rear of the trigger spring using a crochet hook or other tool. Pull the spring forward enough so that it is in front of the holes for the trigger bar shaft in the trigger. See Fig.26. Insert the trigger bar shaft into the trigger (rear end of trigger bar should be positioned into frame at the same time) and release the trigger spring from your tool. The spring should now be riding on the trigger bar shaft.
Install the trigger bar spring. See Fig. 24.
Install the sear and sear spring (you may want to use a slave pin). You may find the 87T sear spring more difficult to install than the 92 sear spring even using a slave pin. See Fig. 13 for orientation of the sear and spring.
Put the hammer spring on the hammer strut and then onto the new hammer. Fig. 14. Holding the frame upside down, install the hammer, strut and spring unit, and push in the hammer pin. Installation is easiest when the trigger is pulled back.
Install the hammer spring cap. If you are going to do testing prior to final assembly that might call for rework of the hammer or sear, use a spare shouldered straight pin from a 92 instead of reinstalling the roll pin. It makes disassembly/reassembly quicker. Otherwise install the roll pin.
Install the barrel/slide assembly with a snap cap and test the pull weight and creep if desired.
Operate the slide quickly to ensure the sear catches the hammer and stays cocked.
Note that testing of the sear and hammer does not require reinstallation of the safety levers or the grips. Be careful that the hammer pin does not back out during testing (it is normally held in place by the left safety lever)
After testing is complete remove the slide/barrel assembly.
Replace the hammer spring cap shouldered straight pin (if used) with the proper roll pin.
Cock the hammer fully to the rear, place the left safety lever into the frame. (Note that once the lever is in place if you let the hammer go forward the left lever cannot fall out). Depress the plunger as you push the safety lever into position on the frame so that it will engage with the hammer pin. See Fig. 9. (use a roll pin driver that has a hole in the end to push the plunger - makes it very easy to install - See Fig. 22). Careful you don't launch the plunger and spring.
Release the hammer forward slowly so that it does not hard impact upon the frame.
Hold the trigger to the rear while reinstalling the Trigger Release Lever.
Install the Right Safety Lever making sure that the lever fits properly over the Trigger Release Lever. Drive the roll pin into position.
Check everything is working properly then reinstall the grips, the slide/barrel assembly and the counterweight.
Slide Disassembly/Reassembly
Remove the extractor pin by driving the pin out from the underside of the slide. See Fig. 27
Remove the extractor and the extractor spring. See Fig. 28.
Remove the firing pin roll pin. See Fig. 29.
Remove the firing pin and spring. See Fig. 30.
Reverse for reassembly. keeping the the firing pin flat upward when driving in the roll pin that holds the firing pin in place.
After Reassembly
As always, be sure to Check for proper function of the gun using a snap cap in the chamber. Safely test fire the gun for proper operation in all modes before you have to depend on it.
